I’m Amy from Alaska - where I was born and raised and lived until retirement. My husband and I are part of the RELD movement and retired early (49) with limited debt. I started my teaching career at the age of 20, with the Copper River School District at a K-12 school in rural AK. Some of my students were only 2 years younger than my husband and I! Over the years we relocated to Anchorage, my husband worked for the IBEW and I completed my career and earned a pension through the Anchorage school district, where both our sons attended. We’ve always been frugal, enjoyed adventure and invested in our health and fitness for our family, as both my husband and I lost parents young.
Since we currently live off one, modest, pension - but believe time is the best richness- we’ve learned to travel on a budget. We drive a hybrid with excellent MPG, pack and prepare our food, stay in budget hotels with rewards programs and airbnbs run by like minded individuals. We buy a yearly national and state park pass and hike at least twice per week. We also run, swim and strength train and enjoy volunteering at the local food bank- delivering weekly food boxes, and doing yard work and landscaping for no charge for those in need.
Our cabin in AK is our primary residence and this is a place we bought after looking to buy some land to park our RV. We made the owner an all cash offer at about half their asking price and they took it! We got to work immediately rehabilitating the property and completing the cabin entirely out of pocket and with all our own labor. The property was devastated in the 2015 Sockeye fire and we barely made it out and to safety in time. Fire service air dropped retardant and water on the cabin and were able to save it. We made a pact to pay it forward with kindness and service for the rest of our lives and enjoy every day that we’re blessed to experience.
