I’m 20 and I just really like taking photos. I’m not a professional or anything—I just enjoy capturing moments that look and feel cool to me. Over time, it’s become more than that. It’s kind of how I show how I see things. A lot of my inspiration comes from places like Guajataca. There’s just something about the way everything looks and feels there that makes me want to capture it. I like taking photos that feel real, not staged—just moments as they happen. I’m still learning, but I care about getting better and creating photos that people can connect with.

I believe I should be awarded this grant because photography has become more than just something I enjoy—it’s something that’s helped me get through a really difficult time in my life.

I lost my mom a little over a year ago, and since then my grandparents have become my guardians. At the same time, I’ve taken on a big role in helping take care of my family, including my younger siblings when things get tough. My grandpa recently recovered from cancer, and my grandma is currently battling heart disease, so a lot of responsibility has fallen on me.

Through all of this, photography has been my outlet. It’s how I slow down, process everything, and find something positive even during hard moments. Taking photos—especially in places like Guajataca—gives me a sense of peace and reminds me that there’s still beauty in the world.

I’m not a professional, but I’m real. Everything I capture comes from a genuine place, and I think that’s what makes my work meaningful. This grant would give me the chance to keep growing, to invest more into something that’s helped me stay grounded, and to continue sharing moments that might help others feel something too.

I’m not just passionate about photography—I rely on it. And with the opportunity this grant provides, I know I can turn that passion into something even more impactful.
