Ashley Irby

I serve as a board member for Friends of King William Animal Shelter, where I am Chair of the Fundraising Committee and Chair of the Marketing Committee, and I manage the organization’s social media presence. In this capacity, I support outreach, communications, and fundraising initiatives that directly impact the shelter’s operations and the animals in its care. In addition to my organizational role, I am a municipal shelter foster working closely with animals from Regional Animal Shelter – King William, Virginia. I specialize in fostering high-stress and behaviorally sensitive dogs—those who may not thrive in a kennel environment and require a more structured, stable setting to decompress and progress. My foster work focuses on providing consistency, daily care, and behavioral support while coordinating closely with shelter staff and volunteers. I also take an active role in advocacy for the animals in my care, which includes increasing their visibility, supporting their medical needs through fundraising efforts, and working to maintain stable placements whenever possible. My responsibilities extend beyond individual animals to broader community engagement. Through marketing, fundraising, and communications efforts, I help strengthen the connection between the shelter and the community it serves, increasing awareness, support, and placement opportunities for animals in need. At the core of my work is collaboration—between fosters, shelter staff, volunteers, and community members—to ensure that animals receive the time, care, and opportunities necessary to reach successful outcomes.

Seagull’s story represents the kind of outcome that becomes possible when a foster has the time, resources, and support to fully meet an animal where they are.

Seagull spent 234 days in my care, including 173 days in foster, after entering the shelter as a highly stressed, overwhelmed dog who struggled in the kennel environment. As his foster, I provided daily structure, consistency, and behavioral support to help him decompress and gradually build confidence. Over time, he transformed from a hyperactive, anxious dog into the lovable goofball we know today.

His journey was not linear. He was adopted once, returned, and after continued time together in foster, it became clear that he was meant to stay in my family. That came from sustained care, continued advocacy, and the ability to provide him with stability through each chapter of his story.

During his brief adoption period, I also took initiative to support his dental needs by researching funding options and organizing fundraising efforts to cover his dental procedure. This ensured he received necessary care while remaining in a consistent environment, rather than facing additional disruption.

As a municipal shelter foster, I work with high-need animals who require more than basic support to succeed. While the shelter provides essential resources, additional costs related to stress-induced home wreckings, behavior support, and continued education to grow myself fall outside of government budgets.

This grant would directly support my ability to continue fostering at this level by helping offset those needs and allowing me to pursue additional training to better support complex cases, including animals like Seagull and those with specialized needs such as deafness or significant behavioral challenges.

Support at this level strengthens not only individual outcomes, but the broader capacity of the shelter system by allowing animals more time, stability, and appropriate placement opportunities. Seagull’s outcome is an example of what can be achieved when every resource is available exactly when it needs to be.

This grant would help make it possible to continue providing that same level of care to future animals who need it.
