I recently started a free pet food pantry in Brooklyn, New York, the Park Slope Pet Food Pantry. Our first distribution was held this past saturday, and we plan to have distributions every month. We have started a limited registration process but in only a month, we have already signed up over 60 families and about 100 cats and dogs.
The majority of our clients are low-income, immigrant families. The need is great, as the cost of food for animals and humans has gone up so much that families are having to choose between feeding themselves or their pets.
There is currently, in particular, a cat crisis in New York City, where people are dumping friendly cats on the streets because they cannot feed them or provide them with low-cost vet care or spay/neuter. We are hoping to help with supplying free pet food for families that need it.
Right now, we are a small group of 4 volunteers who are supplying the food by private donations. We are hoping to become a 501(c)(3) charity which would allow us to hopefully receive larger and corporate food donations. This grant would enable us to provide more free pet food to families in need until we are able to become a full charity. Thank you for your consideration.
