Dawn seeley

My name is Dawn Seeley, and I am the founder and director of Mimi’s Place, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of high-needs dogs in Laurens, South Carolina. My journey into animal welfare began with a singular, life-altering moment: during a local public health crisis that closed our county’s primary intake facility, I found myself on the front lines of an animal welfare emergency. Taking in my first rescue, Jade—who required immediate, intensive medical intervention—solidified my commitment to not just 'saving' dogs, but creating a systemic solution for the vulnerable animals that traditional shelters often lack the capacity to support. As both a passionate advocate and a dedicated researcher, I approach animal rescue through a lens of evidence-based practice. I am currently leading the development of 'Mimi’s Cottage,' an innovative rehabilitation center that utilizes canine color theory and home-mimic environments to drastically reduce kennel stress and improve adoption outcomes. My goal is to build a sustainable model of rescue that prioritizes behavioral wellness, providing every dog in our care the foundation they need to successfully transition from trauma to a permanent, loving home.

Why You Should Be Awarded This Grant
To be an effective leader in animal welfare, one must be part visionary, part problem-solver, and part boots-on-the-ground advocate. My story—and the mission of Mimi’s Place—is built at the intersection of these roles.
The Catalyst: A Crisis in the Community
My journey began in Laurens, South Carolina, following a disease outbreak that forced our local municipal shelter to close its doors. When local authorities reached out for help, I didn't hesitate. I opened my home to three dogs, including Jade, who arrived with severe medical trauma. Her fight for survival against illness became the blueprint for Mimi’s Place. I realized then that my town needed more than just a foster home; it needed a professional, dedicated sanctuary for the dogs that everyone else had forgotten.
The Mimi’s Place Difference
We are not just a rescue; we are a rehabilitation model driven by hands-on experience:
Intentional Environmental Design: We integrate Canine Color Theory—specifically high-contrast Blue and Yellow palettes—into our infrastructure. Because dogs perceive these colors most vividly, this design choice actively reduces anxiety and improves engagement during training sessions.
The "Home-Mimic" Approach: We are currently finalizing Mimi’s Cottage, a specialized, climate-controlled rehabilitation center. Unlike sterile, high-stress kennels, this space mimics a residential living environment, allowing dogs to decompress and learn home manners in a setting that prepares them for a domestic life.
  • Practical Results: We document our behavioral successes, proving that even a small, rural nonprofit can solve complex behavioral issues through intentional, compassionate design.
Why Mimi’s Place Merits This Grant
Your investment will catalyze a proven solution for "hard-to-place" rescues.
Direct Impact: Your support helps us finalize the Cottage interior, immediately increasing our capacity to provide a safe, calm harbor for 3–5 high-needs dogs every month.
Operational Excellence: As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we run a lean, high-output operation where 100% of funds are directed toward life-saving care.
Community Sustainability: We have built a robust base of local volunteers and donors who are deeply invested in seeing this "best practice" model thrive in our community.
By investing in Mimi’s Place, you are investing in a future where behavioral trauma is no longer a death sentence, but a challenge we have the tools to overcome.
