My name is Michelle Ferris, and I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and animal advocate. Family has always been at the center of my life, and that same love and compassion naturally extends to animals in need. I don’t run a rescue organization—I simply saw abandoned and feral cats struggling to survive at our desert property and couldn’t look the other way. Since then, I’ve dedicated countless hours and my own resources to providing food, water, shelter, medical care, and safe rescue opportunities. I’ve trapped cats for spay and neuter surgeries, transported them to veterinary appointments, partnered with rescue organizations and foster families, and done everything I can to give them a chance at a healthy, safe life. The work is often challenging and emotional, but it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. These cats have reminded me that even the smallest acts of kindness can change a life. In many ways, they have rescued me too, giving me purpose, hope, and joy through difficult seasons. Whether I’m caring for my family, supporting friends, or helping animals who have no one else, I try to lead with kindness, compassion, and the belief that every life has value. My greatest hope is to leave the world a little kinder than I found it—for both people and the animals who have no voice.

Forever Begins Today

When I first started spending time at our desert property, I never imagined I would become responsible for an entire colony of abandoned cats. One by one they appeared—hungry, frightened, and simply trying to survive in the harsh desert. Some were pregnant, some were injured, and many had clearly never known the safety of a home.

I couldn’t walk away.

What began as putting out food and water quickly became a mission to stop the cycle of suffering. I built sheltered feeding areas, installed automatic feeders and fresh water stations, and spent countless hours earning the trust of cats that had every reason to fear people. I trapped them one by one so they could be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and receive medical care. I’ve driven hours to veterinary appointments, coordinated with rescue organizations, found foster homes, and celebrated every time another cat had the chance for a better life.

One experience that will stay with me forever was discovering a mother cat with her newborn kittens. Watching those tiny lives grow from vulnerable newborns into healthy, playful kittens—and knowing they would never have to repeat the cycle of homelessness—made every sleepless night and every mile driven worthwhile. More recently, another litter of abandoned kittens appeared at my door with no mother in sight. Instead of giving up, I worked tirelessly to find help, reaching out to rescues and foster families so they could have the future they deserved.

This journey hasn’t just changed the lives of the cats—it has changed mine.

There have been days when work stress and life’s challenges felt overwhelming. Caring for these animals gave me purpose on those difficult days. Even after exhausting weeks, knowing they were waiting for me reminded me that showing up mattered. Watching a frightened feral cat slowly learn to trust, or seeing a rescued kitten finally feel safe enough to play, has brought me peace, hope, and joy during times when I needed it most.

These cats rescued me as much as I rescued them.

The grant would allow me to continue providing food, medical care, trapping equipment, and emergency veterinary treatment while helping more cats find safe homes instead of struggling to survive in the desert. Every dollar would directly improve the lives of animals that have no one else to speak for them.

Rescue is not just about saving animals. It’s about creating hope where there was none. It’s about proving that compassion can change lives—both theirs and ours. I am grateful every day that these cats found their way to my doorstep because, in so many ways, they helped me find a deeper sense of purpose and reminded me how powerful kindness can be.
